The Kindness of Strangers: How a Man I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Land the Role That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a friend. Since my companion was considering enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had planned a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a large ten-floor structure on the UWS known as International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He asked me what I did, and I explained that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He proposed that I consider applying for a position with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that night. The engineering student approached me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but right away explained to my host that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where anything feels possible – she responded: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his full name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in numerous aspects. I lacked the bravery or self-assurance to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and seek a position. And, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia led me to a position in Switzerland where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
