India's capital Rises to Dangerous Haze Following Diwali
On Tuesday morning inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves breathing extremely polluted air that registered in the "critical" level.
Record-Breaking Air Quality Measurements
Multiple areas of the capital showed an AQI above 500, which represents 10x the safe threshold recommended by the World Health Organization.
In some locations, levels of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of eighteen hundred, equating to 15 to 20 times above acceptable standards.
Firecracker Prohibition and New Changes
For the past four years, officials had enforced a total prohibition on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that covers the metropolis as the cold season begins.
Yet recently, the newly elected regional government petitioned the judicial authority to propose a relaxation of the prohibition.
The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously doubted by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a middle ground between "tradition and ecological concerns".
Court Verdict and Implementation
Much to the frustration of public health and environmental advocates, judges approved the proposal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during specific periods throughout the Diwali.
Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread violation of the time restrictions across the capital, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener version.
Several monitoring devices throughout the capital recorded pollution spiking around the night hours to extremely hazardous readings seen during celebrations in at least recent memory.
Cross-Border Implications
The proliferation of fireworks during the festival also triggered a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab partially attributing worsening atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on hazardous particles originating in neighboring India following the events.
Long-Standing Pollution Issue
Alarmingly severe concentrations of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have remained as a serious issue for more than 15 years, with the condition showing no improvement.
Near Diwali, the concentration of hazardous airborne contaminants in the environment has been found to shoot up to significantly exceeding the peak readings ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously regarded as the planet's dirtiest city.
Various Pollution Contributors
The situation in the city is caused by a combination of different contributors including transportation pollution, construction debris, construction activities, garbage fires and haze from farm burning in nearby regions of farming communities.
In these regions, agricultural workers routinely set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, producing hazardous pollution that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as cooler air sets in.
Medical and Financial Impact
Both financial and medical consequences on the approximately 33 million people residing in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to numerous research.
The contaminated air causes increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing diseases, and can result in oncological diseases.
Environmental contamination is estimated to be responsible for 10,000 early fatalities per year in the city.
