From Praise to Rage: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein File Disclosure is Mixed.
Conservative reactions to the partial release of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and image are visible in some of the documents, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about what may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded increased transparency.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
But, a segment of conservative commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet a few are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to go on the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Issues Statement
Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing those documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, broader discourse on the right was relatively muted following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to enact a bill requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were provided physical binders of files that contained little previously unseen data.
