Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
