Crucial Insights after the European Cup's Opening Weekend

Following the first round of the 2025-26 Champions Cup in the books, we explore the primary lessons emerging from the fixtures.

Top 14 superiority has been the narrative in the past few campaigns, with the previous five victors all representing France's elite division. However, the initial stage featured multiple impressive wins from emerging challengers.

Bordeaux Appear Primed to Defend Their Title

Defending champions Bordeaux Begles were imperious in the competition the previous campaign, overpowering Toulouse in the semi-final and then Northampton in the grand finale.

Currently sitting sixth in the Top 14, doubts have been raised about their ability to repeat the feat this year. Yet, in the first round, Bordeaux issued a reminder that they are well-positioned of winning back-to-back titles with a points-laden away victory in South Africa.

Handed a challenging fixture at Loftus Versfeld against a powerful Bulls side boasting internationals like Willie le Roux, Handre Pollard, and Canan Moodie, they were behind 33-22 at the break.

Yet, as champions do, they unleashed their power in the final 40 minutes, roaring back to secure a 46-33 victory – keeping the Bulls scoreless after the halftime.

France international aces Damian Penaud and star wing Louis Bielle-Biarrey were among the try-scorers. Any team with that pair on the edges has a chance against any opponent.

Formidable Bath Appear Equipped of Going the Distance

Bath's sole success in the Champions Cup dates back almost 30 years ago. Throughout the ensuing period, they have arguably not been more prepared to win it again.

The reigning domestic title-holders are leading the way in the league after six games and will be hoping to transfer that success into Europe – particularly following a surprise group-stage exit in the last campaign.

Johann van Graan's men looked a highly composed and balanced unit in their 40-14 victory against Munster, who are third in the Celtic league.

They marry offensive flair – sealing the try-scoring point in under 20 minutes at the Rec – with tough tackling, keeping their visitors at a distance when they attempted a fightback.

With the likes of Finn Russell and Ben Spencer directing play and quality reserves all over the squad, they must be viewed as credible threats for a first European trophy since 1998.

Bath's key result in the pools a year ago was in the following week, an agonising 22-21 setback at Benetton with a changed side.

Having secured a league trophy under their belt and leading in England once more, Van Graan could be inclined to concentrate more effort on the Champions Cup this year.

Glasgow Deal Sale a Major Blow

There are strong teams everywhere you look, but the first group looks set to be one of the most competitive.

In the competition's present structure, a lot is emphasized regarding winning your home games, which is why Glasgow's win on the road at Sale on the first day might just prove crucial.

The team from Scotland were trailing by 14 points after 20 minutes but came back strongly, and two tries early in the second half gave them a precious five points.

By achieving this, they provided their prospects of qualification a significant early boost and, in turn, handed a hefty blow to their opponents.

With the French giants – imperious 56-19 winners against the Sharks – and Saracens, who comfortably defeated Clermont, in the same section, we can expect high-stakes drama.

And as for Glasgow's traditional foes Edinburgh? They turned in one of their finest displays in Europe in a long time to stun heavyweights Toulon 33-20, on a successful weekend for the Scottish game.

Could Ioane the Missing Ingredient of the Leinster Quest?

If there's one team you would expect to be in the mix at the business end of the season in Europe, it would be European giants Leinster.

However in recent seasons it has ended in disappointment, as they have promised much but not won the trophy. Runners-up three years in a row between 2022-24, they looked overwhelming favourites last season after backing up a 62-0 mauling of Harlequins in the round of 16 with a 52-0 win over Glasgow in the last eight.

It was hoped that All Black star Jordie Barrett would be the missing ingredient to win the championship, but they were surprised and experienced a surprise defeat to Northampton Saints in the semi.

This year they are testing another New Zealand import, this time with Rieko Ioane, who provided a try assist on his first appearance in Saturday's 45-28 success against Harlequins.

Could Ioane be the player to return the cup to Ireland for the first time since 2018?

Stormers Appear Equipped to Compete

Ever since the teams from South Africa joined the Champions Cup in 2022-23, the deepest run achieved is the quarter-finals, and last year none of them managed to make it out of the pool phase, with several rotated sides fielded.

Will this be the campaign that is different? The Stormers are leading the URC and started their Champions Cup adventure with a 26-17 victory on the road at Bayonne on the opening night.

The words from players and coaches were promising too, with individuals involved talking about their aspirations, and the players such as stars Cobus Reinach, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and Damian Willemse absent for the round-one win.

The Stormers seem the most likely contender for a team from South Africa to progress far in the event, but do not rule out the Sharks and Bulls, who both lost this weekend but did play Toulouse and Bordeaux respectively.

Saints and Pau Produce a Classic Encounter

There were several candidates for match of the round, and this one was a leading candidate.

Pau have been enjoying a superb campaign, guided by stars Julian Montoya and Facundo Isa and ex-England half-back Dan Robson.

They are presently in second place in the Top 14 and the stadium was buzzing at the Stade du Hameau|their home ground|Pau's
